Bruce Anders brings broad legal experience

CIRI hired Bruce Anders as general counsel on June 16. Anders has practiced for 11 of his 16 years as an attorney in Alaska, and has experience in both private and public legal sectors.

“I am pleased that Bruce has joined the CIRI team,” said Margie Brown, CIRI president and chief executive officer. “We are pursuing many business opportunities – especially energy-related opportunities – where Bruce’s considerable skills and experience are welcome.”

Before joining CIRI, Anders was chief of the State of Alaska Oil and Gas Division’s Leasing and Permitting/Petroleum System Integrity Section since December 2006. Anders served as a member of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s Natural Gasline Team, helping to draft, promote and defend the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act. Anders began his legal career as a Judge Advocate in the U.S. Army, serving as trial counsel and general law attorney at the Fort Wainwright Law Center, and as Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, both in Fairbanks, Alaska. From there he was selected to represent the Army in environmental litigation and compliance issues at the U.S. Army Environmental Law Division in Washington D.C.

Anders’ legal career has been diverse, including stints litigating insurance defense matters at a large firm in Madison, Wis., representing rural Alaskans as a partner in a Bethel, Alaska, law office, representing the State of Alaska in environmental litigation as an assistant attorney general with the Alaska Department of Law and representing the Bureau of Land Management and Minerals Management Service at the Department of Interior Regional Solicitor’s office.

“It is important to me that CIRI always maintain a strong ethical framework within which we aggressively pursue business opportunities,” said Anders. “I look forward to helping the company hold that course.”

Anders earned a Bachelor of Arts cum laude from Duke University in 1989 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Oregon School of Law in 1992.
