CIRI and Cook Inlet Tribal Council (CITC) were selected to receive a 2010 United States Census Award by the Seattle Regional Census Center. The award honors individuals and organizations that show exemplary commitment to helping to relay the importance of being counted in the 2010 Census.
The U.S. Census’ Seattle Regional Deputy Director, Mike Burns, gave the awards in a small ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at the CIRI Building. U.S. Rep. Don Young and U.S. Sen. Mark Begich were also honored and attended the ceremony.
The Census counts every resident in the United States as required by the Constitution to, among other things, apportion seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Census also supplies demographic data that helps the government and other organizations decide where to allocate funding for projects that impact communities.
In 2010, the U.S. Census partnered with 1,800 Alaska community organizations and leaders to generate community support for the Census. In Alaska, eleven organizations were selected to receive an award, including CIRI, CITC, the state of Alaska, Rep. Don Young, Sen. Mark Begich, the city of Juneau, the village of Noorvik, the city of Palmer, the Anchorage School District, the Fairbanks Northstar Borough and First Alaskans Institute
