CIRI descendant Brian J. Masuda graduated from Robert Service High School in Anchorage on May 15. In 2006, while attending the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Upward Bound program, Brian decided that he wanted to pursue a degree in civil engineering. During his junior year, he participated in a six-weekend, pre-college course with the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP) at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Brian worked as an intern at Peak Oilfield Services for nine weeks this summer while continuing his pre-college course with ANSEP. He is now attending UAA full-time with scholarships received through The CIRI Foundation, Tyonek Native Corp. and money he earned as an ANSEP intern. Brian is the son of Michaelene Stephan and Nial Masuda, Sr., grandson of Selina Joshua of Black River Falls, Wis., Melva and Seraphim Stephan Sr. and Mitsue and Robert Masuda of Anchorage.
