Officer commended
CIRI shareholder John Peratrovich was recently commended by the Alaska State Legislature for his dedication and accomplishments as the village public safety officer (VPSO) of Savoonga, Alaska. He has been Savoonga’s VPSO since November 2005. On July 1, 2007, Officer Peratrovich responded to a situation involving an intoxicated male threatening residents with a rifle. Rather than wait for Alaska State Troopers to be dispatched from Nome and risk serious injury to residents, he confronted and detained the suspect with minimal force and without injury. The Alaska State Troopers awarded Officer Peratrovich a Commendation for Honorable Service for his actions. Peratrovich is a grandson of the late Alaska Native civil rights leaders Elizabeth and Roy Peratrovich.
