The Raven Runners, CIRI’s team for the 2010 Alaska Run for Women were part of a record number of entrants in this event. Over 7,100 women participated in the race on Saturday, June 12.
The first Alaska Run for Women event was held in 1993 and drew 700 participants. Now one of the most visible running events in the state, 5,487 runners and walkers (including 310 breast cancer survivors) participated in 2009. The mission of the Alaska Run for Women is “To raise money for and awareness of breast cancer and women’s health, and to showcase the talents of Alaska’s women athletes.” Approximately $170,000 was generated for that grants program. Of that, a minimum of 70% went to Alaska organizations concerned with breast cancer outreach, education and early detection. Approximately 30% went to breast cancer research projects.
